Stable cottage is in an area that many people class as an access route to either the Lakes or Scotland. However they are missing an area that is engaging, intriguing and historically rich as any of the regions most celebrated destinations (without the crowds). Stable Cottage is in the area known as Eden. This is an area that is totally unspoilt, here you will find quiet footpaths (you may be the only walkers), just waiting to be explored. These paths are rich in wild flowers, and abundant in wildlife. I can guide you to where RED SQUIRRELS, ROE DEER are often seen, whilst buzzards soar high above. If you are a keen bird watcher we have reserves close by Geltsdale (hen Harriers) or Campfield Marsh (wading birds) whilst Caerlaverock with many thousand wintering barnacle geese and swans is only approx 40 minutes away.
Also we have castles both ruined and entire, old Abbeys, stately homes, open gardens, stone circles, craft exhibitions, two specialist rare plant nurseries, National Trust properties. The famous carlisle/Settle railway can be joined only 8 miles away at Armathwaite. Explore routes that I personally devised for you using either car or cycle. These routes will take you along highways and byways where you will hardly meet another vechicle, with far reaching views of The Pennines or Lakeland Fells. My routes go into the Eden valley an area often overlooked, this lush green area is full of undulating countryside a patchwork of hamlets, very old villages built of local sandstone many with village greens and streams running through them. The area is defined by the meandering River Eden. You won't find these villages in any guide books. Locally within 5 miles we have Highhead Sculpture Valley and tea room (1 mile), Hutton in the Forest Historic house (5 miles), Upfront Gallery (5 miles), the nearest pub/restaurant is 2 and a half miles. If shopping is your pleasure then Penrith 9.5 miles is full of individual specialist shops that can no longer be found in the big cities, whilst Carlisle is 9.5 miles has all the well known chain stores, a good castle where you can have guided tours, Cathedral and museum. here you will find swimming pools, tenpin bowling and cinemas. If you are a serious shopper, the metro centre is only approx one and a half hours away.
If you are a serious walker, you are on the doorstop with good access to the Lake District National park starting at Caldbeck 8 miles, Ullswater 15 miles and Scotland, 22 miles. Stable Cottage is the perfect get away for these seeking to return to the great outdoors
with a myriad of activites close by. Wither you want your holiday active or restful you can find it from this cottage.
Some of my guests have been returning since the cottage was built. Once you discover this gem of a quiet area you get pulled back again and again.
